Asians have a deep connection to the term ‘uprooted’, particularly due to the political climate of recent decades. A2Z Art Gallery is honored to present a selection of five artists—Aung Ko, Nge Lay, Tran Trong Vu, Bao Vuong, and Danhôo—who delve into this delicate subject.
Bảo Vương, for instance, aims to raise awareness of a historical event that is slowly fading from memory. Like thousands of other Vietnamese forced to flee a divided, war-torn country, Bảo and his family embarked on a journey along the banks of the Mekong River, seeking refuge in France as political exiles. Through his paintings, the artist captures fragments of his traumatic history amidst the tumultuous waves of a black ocean.
Similarly, Danhôo had to flee their home country with his family. Exiled from the district of Chợ Lớn, Vietnam, in the 1970s, they arrived in France in 1983. His work narrates tales of reconnecting with his roots while being reborn and flourishing in a new culture.
Trần Trọng Vũ, like Danhôo, embraces his multicultural background. His creations serve as an analogy between the culture of his origin and the one he has made his own. Through art with a sarcastic tone, Vũ navigates between his Vietnamese and French heritage.
Aung Ko and Nge Lay endured military oppression in Myanmar, prompting their flight to find solace in France. Their work serves as a platform to express their experiences and perspectives on the devastating situations they escaped.
Through the art of these five artists, our aim is to shed light on their struggles while also showcasing the strength and resilience of our kin, which enables them to adapt to any situation.
