In the collective exhibition “INTERPR8”, A2Z Art Gallery have selected a group of 8 Asian contemporary artists, challenging their broad range of artistic diversity in order to harmonise their individual milieu with the aim to produce a body of works that studies the interpretability of the number 8 and the meaning of 8 within their cultures.

Biblical numerology signifies the code number 8 means Resurrection and Regeneration. It is the number of a new beginning. The number 8 is a symbol of harmony, balance, abundance and power. The ability to make decisions.

The Pythagoreans called the number eight “Ogdoad” and considered it the “little holy number”. Number eight is the number of the planet Saturn. In the Tarot, eight is the card for Justice or Strength. Strength symbolizes inner strength and determination. The amount of clouds in the sky is measured in Oktas (from 0 to 8). In the world of computers, a byte is eight bits. The mathematical symbol for infinity is like an 8 on its side. There are eight fluid ounces in a cup. There are eight pints in a gallon.

Number 8 is a very lucky number in China. In China eight is homonym for prosperity. When pronounced it sounds much like the word “prosper”. A double eight, as in 88, is said to bring double joy. The eighth day of the Chinese New Year is the day for the annual gathering of all the gods in Heaven. The opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in China began on 8/8/08 at 8 seconds and 8 minutes past 8 pm.

It is with these philosophies in mind that the curators from the Hong Kong based Parisian gallery have selected this collective of Asian contemporary artists in order to present their individual ideologies expounding a world view.
