YANG Mian

Born in 1970. Yang Mian lives and works in Chengdu, China.

Graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1997, Yang Mian specializes in oil painting. He currently teaches in the Fine Arts Department in Chengdu’s Southwest Jiaotong University.

After exploring the influence of advertising images of idealized Chinese women from the 1990s to 2005 to the Chinese public, Yang Mian has been studying the intriguing topics of the impact of the artistic media and the education of Chinese audiences.

Through reappropriation of the original image, Yang Mian brings us back to the geneses of pictorial art and printing : C.M.Y.K. These primary colors are all in perfect round shapes and voluntarily placed by the artist one next to the other. The clarity of the circle and the harmony of colors symbolize the quest of perfection.

Yang Mian’s works have been well exhibited across the world. In China, his traces could be found in Beijing‘s Yan Huang Art Museum, National Art Museum of China, Songzhuang Art Museum and Today Art Museum; in Shanghai, the Z-art Center; in Chengdu, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Blue Roof Museum. Other exhibitions in the country include the Guangdong Art Museum, Tianjin’s Taida Dangdai Art Museum, Jiangsu’s Suzhou Art Museum, the Shenzhen Art Museum, Nanjing Art Museum and the Jiangsu Art Museum.

In Asia, Yang Mian has exhibited in South Korea’s Heyri Art Foundation and Gwangju Museum of Art. He has also revealed his work at Indonesia’s National Museum in Jakarta; Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and Tokyo’s Nitten in Japan; Taipei’s Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan and also at Orient Foundation’s Casa Garden in Macau.

In the West, the Netherlands’ Stadsmuseum Almelo, Switzerland’s Museum of Fine Arts Bern, London’s Louise Blouin Foundation, the United States’ Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Spain’s Arts Santa Mònica in Barcelona, and Italy’s Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice have also shown Yang Mian’s works.
